Depth Wish
This project is about the stage design of a short story titled ‘Depth Wish’ by German writer Patrick Süskind. The story focuses on a single theme in a very conversational manner, yet manages to create a desire to read it further by the end. The story revolves around a painter who becomes distressed after a critic comments on “There is no depth” in his painting, leading to his gradual decline and eventual suicide.
The story is a dark meditation on the search for meaning in life and the dangers of obsession. It portrays the character's descent into madness and highlights the destructive power of an all-consuming fixation.
Based on the story analysis, the main design concept is focused on delivering visual descriptions of the painter and details of mood through my imagination because the story does not give details by using a third-person perspective. It limits the reader's imagination but that is the writer’s purpose: to focus on the narrative only. Therefore, I challenged myself to discover the behind scenes of the given conversational manner.
