Omelas: The Show Must Go On
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin
Imagine you arrive at the theatre to watch The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. Instead of taking your seat, you are brought backstage and asked to help build the show. At first, the task feels playful and collaborative. But as the show goes on, the director pushes everyone in the name of making a perfect performance. You build the set, adjust the lights, follow instructions, and are eventually asked to take part in hurting the child. In that moment, what can you do? Refuse? Follow? Watch? Walk away?
This is not a show that asks you to leave with good feelings. It asks what happens when you see what is happening, understand your part in it, and still let the show go on. Through live camera work, projection mapping and audience labour, Omelas: The Show Must Go On turns spectatorship into participation, and participation into responsibility.
